1. Raleigh Capitol Christmas Tree

When: December 11, 2025

Time: 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM

The lighting of the State Christmas Tree at the Capitol marks the official start of the holiday season throughout North Carolina. This beloved tradition brings thousands of visitors to Capitol Square each December for an evening ceremony that combines music, community spirit, and the illumination of a magnificent 26-foot North Carolina-grown Fraser fir.

The annual ceremony typically begins at 5:30 p.m. with holiday music performed by the Raleigh Concert Band, followed by speeches from the governor and dignitaries around 6 p.m. The lit tree creates a stunning focal point for downtown Raleigh that symbolizes statewide celebration.

This is a free event and no reservations are needed. For newcomers to Raleigh, this event offers a perfect introduction to the city's commitment to preserving traditions while fostering community connections.

Fieldstream Farm features Wake County's premier drive-through Christmas light show with over 2 million lights and perhaps the longest LED lit tunnel in the world with over 200,000 lights. This one-mile experience has been a family tradition since 1996, with the drive-through event opening in 2019.

What sets Fieldstream Farm apart is the incredible variety of displays. The lights take on the shapes of favorite movie characters, including Disney's Cars, Frozen, Mickey Mouse, and Toy Story, plus the Wizard of Oz, Frosty the Snowman, and many other familiar characters.

Perfect for countless photo opportunities from your car, the farm uses a timed ticketing system to manage traffic flow, ensuring visitors can enjoy the displays without excessive congestion. For families with young children or anyone who prefers viewing lights from the comfort of their vehicle, Fieldstream Farm offers an exceptional experience.

The drive-through format makes it accessible for all ages and abilities, and the impressive scale of the displays creates lasting memories that justify the admission price. Advance ticket purchase is required, so plan ahead to secure your preferred date and time.

3. Raleigh Tree Lighting and Holiday Market

Location: Moore Square

When: November 21st, 2025

Time: 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM

The Annual Downtown Raleigh Tree Lighting and Holiday Market has moved to historic Moore Square park in the heart of downtown for 2025. This signature event officially kicks off the holiday season with an evening filled with community celebration, festive shopping, and family-friendly entertainment that captures the essence of downtown Raleigh's vibrant culture.

As the Raleigh Christmas Tree illuminates against the backdrop of Moore Square, visitors can enjoy free pictures with Santa Claus, browse a large vendor market featuring local artisans and gift makers, and experience festive performances by talented local artists.

The historic park setting provides an intimate, walkable atmosphere that encourages neighbors and visitors to mingle, shop, and celebrate together. Food and drink vendors offer seasonal treats to keep you warm and energized throughout the evening.

For those living or considering homes in downtown Raleigh or nearby neighborhoods like Oakwood or Mordecai, this event represents the accessible, community-focused urban holiday experience that defines city living in Raleigh. The combination of free entertainment, local shopping, and festive atmosphere makes it an ideal first holiday outing for families new to the area.

4. Illuminate Art Walk in Downtown Raleigh

Location: Fayetteville Street and Glenwood South, Downtown Raleigh

When: December 5th, 2025

The Illuminate Art Walk in Downtown Raleigh started during the challenging year of 2020. This walk brought joy to the Raleigh community at a time when festivals and parties disappeared. Over a dozen local artists were commissioned to jazz up the plaza and storefronts, and the event has now become a regular annual holiday tradition to add to our Christmas celebrations.

This event has since attracted up to 25,000 people on some weekend nights. This self-guided walking tour features large-scale, interactive, light-based art installations created by local, regional, and international artists. Presented by Cooperating Raleigh Colleges, the art installations can be experienced in as little as 20 minutes or explored leisurely over several hours, making it perfect for various schedules.

Free guided Sip n' Stroll tours are offered on select evenings, providing deeper insights into the artwork. For art enthusiasts and those seeking a contemporary take on holiday traditions, Illuminate represents Raleigh's creative innovation and provides a completely different experience from conventional light displays.

5. Apex Holiday Tour of Lights

Location: Various homes and businesses throughout Apex

When: December 7-26, 2024, nightly 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Located in Apex, a suburb of Raleigh, homes and businesses across town volunteer to spread holiday cheer with beautiful light displays each year, with the Tour of Lights providing a map showing the most efficient way to see all the stops along the tour.

This festive celebration showcases community spirit at its finest, with residents transforming their properties into festive wonderlands for neighbors and visitors to enjoy. The self-guided driving tour allows families to experience multiple displays throughout the town at their own pace.

The mapped route includes some of the area's most impressive private displays, giving visitors insight into the neighborhood's character and holiday enthusiasm. For those considering a move to Apex or already living in this rapidly growing town southwest of Raleigh, the Holiday Tour of Lights offers a wonderful way to explore different neighborhoods while experiencing community pride firsthand.

6. Downtown Cary Christmas Lights

Location: Downtown Cary Park, 327 S. Academy Street

When: December 7, 2024 through early January

Cost: Free

Downtown Cary has transformed into what many consider North Carolina's Christmas town, with Christmas trees lining the streets, giant wreaths and ornaments providing perfect photo stations, and thousands of lights glowing from every corner of the new Downtown Park.

The area features a walkable holiday wonderland with rainbow-lit archways, a glowing sky walk overlooking botanical gardens, a grand Christmas tree, and a red-and-green fountain that flickers to holiday music. The Downtown Park serves as the crown jewel of Cary's holiday display, offering numerous photo opportunities.

The Gifting Tree Project adds a charitable component, with local families, schools, and organizations decorating trees in competition to win donations for their chosen nonprofit groups. Fire pits stationed around the park provide cozy gathering spots where families can warm up while enjoying the displays.

The annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in early December launches the season with activities from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., including photos with Santa, storytime, art activities, a penguin playground with snow, vendor markets, food trucks, and performances. For families considering calling Cary home, this Christmas celebration of lights is the perfect way ring in the holiday season.

7. North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival

Cost: $17-$41 depending on date; children 2 and under free

For years, the North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival features hundreds of larger-than-life lanterns handcrafted and assembled by more than 25 visiting Chinese artisans, with an estimated 2,500 lanterns and more than 15,000 LED lights making up more than 40 distinct displays.

The art of Chinese lantern making dates back more than 2,000 years, with lantern-crafting skills being passed down from generation to generation and popularly used to celebrate Chinese New Year. Displays include interactive features with movement, featuring themes of Chinese culture, mythical creatures, mysterious nature, and interactive exhibits.

The festival includes nightly stage performances at 5:30, 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 p.m., featuring martial arts, traditional dance, acrobatics, and drum performances. Different performances include face-changing mask dances, acrobats spinning in hoops, pole acrobatics, hat juggling, and interactive martial arts demonstrations where children from the audience participate in short lessons.

Food vendors offer Asian-inspired cuisine including crispy spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken bites, and wonton soup, along with coffee, beer, wine, and hot chocolate. The festival typically takes about an hour to walk through completely, though many visitors spend longer enjoying the performances and photo opportunities.

The festival includes a sensory-friendly night in early December with lower music levels, decreased capacity, and no strobe lights, demonstrating the organizers' commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
