Here are the best nature trails and natural areas in the Triangle.

1. Duke Forest

Address: NC-751, Durham, NC

Located in Durham, not far from the downtown area, there is a seven thousand acre Duke Forest that has gravel and dirt trails that are shaded by over one hundred different species of trees that date back to 200 years ago.

Located on the campus of Duke University, this gorgeous area boasts over 5 miles of walking paths all throughout the beautiful terrain. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, and having a picnic are a few of the things that are permitted here. However, make sure to visit the website to view the regulations.

The Duke Forest also provides education and outreach through tours and volunteer events and offers nature-based recreation opportunities that do not conflict with the mission and management of the area.

Suppose you are searching for an adventure hike or a family trip. Visiting the six great trials throughout this area may be for you. These trails are hand-curated for nature lovers; whether you are searching for strenuous heights with elevation or flat, accessible paths, they have it. So, if you are searching for a place to visit, Duke Forest may be the best place for you to enjoy the outdoors.

2. Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park

Address: 1800 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC

The Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park is by the NC Museum of Art and links to the Capital Area Greenway. This park features public art through artists, gardens, trails, and many beautiful, sustainable landscapes. This is a perfect area if you are looking for a day in the outdoors for some relaxing time, a nice run, or a bike.

Most of the trails in this park are in the sun, so be prepared. However, there are many shaded and wooded areas on the sides. Having a picture of the park map before going is recommended because it is hard to find a map when you are there. This park is free admission and is open from dawn to dusk.

This park is highly family-friendly and beginner-friendly. While there are beautiful artworks throughout, there are also many installations that kids can play on, as well as the fields. The easy terrain, no blazes, and nothing blocking your view make it a popular park to visit. You can also add the Greenway to your trails if you are wanting to add more miles.

This is a perfect area if you want a pleasant walk/run while viewing all the beautiful art around you and nature.

3. Hollow Rock Nature Park

Address: 692 Erwin Rd, Durham, NC

Hollow Rock Nature Park is about 75 acres and sits at the Northern end of the New Hope Creek Preserve. It offers approximately 1.5 miles of hiking trails as well as an open play field and a trail that connects to the Duke Forest.

This park offers two natural surface hiking trails. The easy 0.8-mile Headwaters Loop Trial begins at the main parking lot that crosses over the road and goes through the scenic upland forest that is surrounded by the creek.

The easy 0.6-mile Hanging Rock Loop begins at the main lot as well and takes the hikers through the open play field before going toward the creek and to the northern end. Both of these trials take you by the beautiful scenery for bird and wildlife viewing. This is a perfect park to visit if you are looking for an easy and quick walk in the area.

4. Durant Nature Preserve

Address: 8305 Camp Durant Rd, Raleigh, NC

The Durant Nature Preserve has over five miles of trails through one of the lushest and verdant areas. The trail runs almost two miles around the whole circumference of the park along the creek and lake nearby. There are several smaller trails throughout, so if you are searching for an area to get lost exploring the beauty around you, Durant Nature Preserve may be the place to visit.

The City of Raleigh purchased Durant Nature Preserve, which is a part of the goal to protect and preserve natural resources and provide nature-based recreation. This park is open from 7 am to dusk daily, and pets are allowed but must remain on their leases.

However, Durant Park is not always well-blazed. The terrain here is pretty easy, and many people find the hikes here easy. You can put together many of the trails and create about a 5-mile hike throughout the area.

Keep in mind that many people have said the map may be confusing because it does not tell you where you are. However, once you get the hang of all the trails, they are easily accessible. While walking, you will see the lake, a pavilion, a fishing pier, and many other things.

5. Johnston Mill Nature Preserve

Address: 2713 Mt Siani Rd, Chapel Hill, NC

Johnston Mille Nature Preserve is part of an effort to protect natural areas along the New Hope Creek area. There are over 296 acres of small hiking areas with many other features. Throughout the trails are small areas for children to play in.

Since this area is so large, taking a picture of the map is recommended so you know what route you want to take. There are a few hills but nothing too large, so it is a perfect place for anyone.

There are about 3.5 miles of hiking trails. Many of the trails can be connected to create a loop. Since the length and ease of these trails are similar, this is a popular spot for trail runners to visit, as well as local hikers.

There are no sharp turns or confusing signs. Every trail is well-marked and easily accessible for all. There are some stairs and steeper areas, but overall, this is an excellent place if you are searching for an easy terrain to enjoy the day outdoors.
