How To Upgrade Your Home Decor Pictures for Instagram

Instagram is filled with home decor pictures. From little cottages in the French countryside to single-family homes for sale in suburban neighborhoods to apartments at the tops of skyscrapers — many people love sharing pictures of the place they call home.

For some, their home decor pictures are connected to their professional career. A home decor picture can be a part of a brand deal, a sponsored post, or connected to your business somehow. For others, home decor pictures are more of a hobby. They are connected to a blog post, or a recent project, or they are simply put together for personal satisfaction.

No matter what your reason for wanting to upgrade your home decor pictures for Instagram, here are some of our top tips to show off your beautiful home.

Update Finishes Throughout Your Home

In an ideal world, you would be able to move into a new construction home and know that every fixture, finish, and detail matches your taste. However, that is not always the case. If you are moving to a bigger city such as Raleigh, NC, you may have found a home that is in the perfect location but needs a little bit of TLC.

There are a lot of ways you can update finishes and fixtures throughout your home to help show off your style and improve your pictures. These updates don’t have to break the bank either.

Unlike a major renovation, updating and redesigning a room or home focuses on surface-level changes. For instance, repainting your home, changing the flooring or countertops, or choosing a new stain for your wooden surfaces can all have a huge impact on your home.

If you aren’t sure what to post on Instagram, following your journey as your upgrade different parts of your home is a great place to start.

Use Natural Light When Possible

When you are taking pictures of your home, use natural light whenever you can. This means you will need to open your curtains and possibly time your photos to be taken at a certain time of day when the lighting is best. Natural lighting is the best way to show off your space. If you have people in your home pictures, then natural light is also beneficial because it looks flattering on all skin tones.

Natural lighting also creates a warm and welcoming tone for your picture. A photograph taken from an open window during sunset will have a much different message than a photograph taken under a bright fluorescent light.

If you do not have many windows in your home, then investing in some basic photography lighting equipment would be a good decision. This can help you to take quality photos no matter where you are in the house or what time of day it is.

Pick a Few Statement Pieces

When you are decorating your home, don’t feel like you have to cover every single wall and surface. It is better to find a few statement pieces that you truly resonate with than to fill your house with things you don’t like or need.

Your followers are also more likely to engage with your pictures if you have a few pieces that they love and are interested in rather than a huge amount of small details in every picture you post.

Stick To a Style

Of course one of the most beautiful parts of the human experience is that we are constantly changing. Your style right now might not be the same as your style was five years ago. However, whatever your style is now, be sure to find a way to incorporate it into what you are posting on Instagram. People love following accounts with a cohesive aesthetic.

Choose a Theme

One way to make your feed more cohesive is to choose a theme. This theme would normally be something you are passionate about. You show how that passion of yours can be found in the space you call home.

If you are very environmentally conscious, then you can create an account that highlights all of the eco-friendly aspects of your home and your lifestyle. If you love living a simple life, then maybe a cottage-themed feed is best — with pictures of your life in the country, flowers, animals, children, recipes, and home.

If you love fitness, then showcasing your home gym, your outdoor spaces, your favorite workouts, and your closet (filled with workout clothes) is a great theme to have.

Use Cohesive Filters

If you don’t have a specific theme for what you are posting, you can create a cohesive look by using the same filter on all of your pictures. If you are interested in photo-editing, you can experiment to find the perfect, unique filter for your feed. If you are not looking to spend a lot of time editing your photos, there are many filters that photographers sell online that are already made and ready to use.

This is a great option if you change interests often or you like to post about a wide variety of things.

Pick a Color Palette

You are obsessed with the color blue. You use it everywhere in your home and your wardrobe. If this sounds like you, then maybe you should choose a color palette for your feed. If you choose a blue-based palette, you can show the different blue items in your house, your closet, and your community.

Choosing a color palette is a fun way to make your feed a cohesive collection of pictures. Sometimes you have to get creative to find new ways to include your chosen colors.

Play With Textures and Patterns

While some people strive for a simple Instagram feed, others play with textures and patterns as a way to create a visually interesting collection of pictures. For example, if you are interested in vintage home decor, you may use the textures and patterns you find in thrift stores and yard sales to show off your home and your style.

Follow Others for Inspiration

There are a massive amount of people on Instagram posting pictures of their homes. If you are interested in starting your account, try following some people for inspiration.

You can find ideas for new posts, or even get inspired to finish redesigning a part of your house. Social media is a great way to spark your creativity and find a community of people who share the same interests as you.

Know That No Home Is Perfect

While there are a lot of ways to make your Instagram feed look perfect, the truth is that no home is perfect. It can be hard not to compare yourself to the people who run stunning home decor accounts. You might find yourself wondering what you are doing wrong. But those pictures are completely staged, and no one’s home looks Instagram-ready all the time.

You might have kids that leave toys everywhere, or your small closet may be harder to organize in comparison to your favorite Instagram account. You also might not have had time to perfectly manicure your lawn, or your furniture might come from a second-hand store instead of a designer label.

But none of these things are flaws. If your home is a place for you to be safe, rest, and spend time with the people you love, then it is fulfilling its purpose.
